Cue for Collection
Learn how to cue for collection, and how to reward the desired
response, with this method from top trainer/clinician Julie Goodnight.
Collection at
the canter is an
advanced training
technique.
Before you can
begin to teach
your horse
to collect at the
canter, you must
lay the proper
foundation.
First, your
horse must
know how to
give to the bit,
which I explained in “Give to the Bit”
(May ’10). Next, your horse must know
how to pick up the canter on cue, which
I explained in “Cue the Canter” (June
’10). To view these past HorseLink articles,

Here, I’ll first recap my bitting-system
basics. Then I’ll explain the skills you and
your horse will need before starting the
collection exercise. Finally, I’ll give you my
step-by-step technique on how to collect
your horse.
For a visual tutorial on my collection
technique, watch the video on page 8.

episode of my Horse Master series.

To collect your horse,
use your seat and legs
to keep him moving
forward while applying
alternating bit pressure
(right-left-right-left). This
will shorten his frame.
Bitting-System
Basics
Following is my bitting
system, which I
explained more fully in
the May 2010 issue.
Important note: Use
only a snaffle bridle for this type of ground
work. I recommend a Myler Bit at the level
appropriate for the horse’s training, in a
snaffle side piece.
My Goodnight Bitting System consists of
a long harness leather cord with snaps on
each end. To apply, place the middle of the
cord over your horse’s poll, then run each
end through bit rings, between your horse’s
legs and up to the saddle. Adjust it so that
there’s no bit pressure when your horse is
standing square and relaxed. The pressure
will be applied as he
walks or trots; his elbow
will cause a pull
on that side of his Turn page for more
