9 Fuel-Saving Tips
Keep on hauling this
riding season with our
expert’s fuel-saving
strategies.
When you haul your horse,
increase your fuel efficiency
with the following tips.
1 Choose the right trailer.
Look for a trailer made
from lightweight aluminum
with an aerodynamic V-nose
front, which cuts down air
resistance.
2 Watch drag. Hay racks, drop-down
feed doors, and roof vents all create
drag. On a gooseneck, a roof-mounted
truck wing can help lift the air above the
trailer nose, decreasing drag.
3 Buy a second fuel tank. A second
fuel tank will allow you to avoid filling
up in states where fuel costs are high. It’ll
also allow you to buy more fuel when you
find a deal.
4 Check the tires. Inflate all tires to the
maximum tire pressure. Make sure all
tires are balanced; balanced tires vibrate
less, which saves fuel.
5 Change the filters. When the air and
fuel filters are clean, the engine works
less, which translates into increased fuel efficiency.

6 Check the belts. Make sure the belts
(fan, air conditioning, and power steering)
are in good shape and aren’t slipping.
Replace belts that show wear and tear.
7 Watch water levels. Make sure the
radiator and battery have enough fluid
to get their jobs done efficiently.
8 Slow down! Fifty-five miles-per-hour is
an ideal speed for improved mileage.
On diesel and V-8 gas engines, watch the
tachometer; at highway speeds stay below
2,000 revolutions-per-minute, if possible.
9 Lighten your load. Every extra pound
you haul means less fuel efficiency.
