On Jan. 26, 2010, the U.S. Department of Transportation
issued a nationwide ban prohibiting drivers of commercial
vehicles, such as large trucks and buses, from texting while
driving. Those who are caught may be subject to civil or
criminal penalties of up to $2,750.
“We want the drivers of big rigs
and buses — and those who share the
road with them — to be safe,” said U.S.
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.
“This is an important safety step, and
we will be taking more to eliminate the
threat of distracted driving.”
USRider applauds the ban. Driving

Drivers who text while driving are 20 times more likely to
have an accident than drivers who are
not distracted.
Because of the safety risks associated
with texting, 19 states already
prohibit drivers from texting behind
the wheel, according to the Governors’
Highway Safety Association, and
another 10 states restrict texting by
novice drivers.
